Naruto Shippuden Opening for Season 8
To me, the opening of season 8 in Naruto Shippuden was one of my favorite openings for any show ever. Here is my analysis of it.
It begins with Naruto falling into the ocean. As he descends deeper into the water with a blank expression on his face and his headband in his hand, his surroundings grow darker, and what looks like blades begin to appear from below. Between these blades, in the members of the Akatsuki are hiding murky darkness. At this point in the series, much of the focus was on Naruto trying to bring his friend Sasuke back home, who had left the village and become evil. The Akatsuki is also largely responsible for Sasuke going down this path. This part symbolizes the hopelessness that Naruto felt during this part of the series, and the blades and Akatsuki members hidden in the background represent the major obstacles and causative factors for Naruto's hopelessness.
The next part shows Sasuke face to face and floating above Naruto. After a brief pause, he stabs Naruto in the chest and the background becomes fading to a bright red color. Sasuke stabbing Naruto in the best shows how deeply he has fallen into the "dark" path and the bright red color represents the energy of the Kyuubi that resides within Naruto and tends to appear in moments of extreme rage, desperation, or when Naruto's life is in danger, usually causing Naruto to lose total control of himself.
When the background becomes completely red, the hands of his friends suddenly appear and begin pushing him up, and the color of the background softens and changes back to a blue color. The push by Naruto's friends begin to accelerate him upwards until he finally flies above the water. This shows that when things seem hopeless, Naruto's friends are also there to support him and so with their help, he can get out of these situations.
Once he is flying above the water, his face is still blank at first, but he then snaps out of it and ties his headband back around his head. As he looks down, Sasuke is floating at the surface with his eyes closed. He starts to sink into the dark water and once he is fully submerged, his eyes open, showing bright red mengekyou sharingan eyes that he acquired through the death of his older brother. Naruto dives down towards him with a changed and determined expression. This final scene is showing that even though Sasuke falls deeper into the darkness, with the support of his friends, Naruto is now ready to face all oncoming challenges and to do whatever it takes to bring Sasuke back.
